Sikhs Ask Army to Lift Ban on Turbans, Unshorn Hair E-mail

Two Army recruits who follow the Sikh faith say they were initially told the turbans and long hair essential to their religious beliefs would not be an issue in their military service. Now ready to begin active duty, they are hearing otherwise. An NPR story this morning noted that the Religious Freedom Restoration Act will require the government to make the case against these specific recruits, despite some Army officers in the past who were able to "serve with distinction" as observant Sikhs.
