Fort Bragg to Host Christian Outreach Event E-mail

Fort Bragg, a US Army installation in North Carolina, will play host today to a evangelical outreach concert event for the entire surrounding community. Some are crying foul:

Americans United for Separation of Church and State said the "Rock the Fort" event, put on by the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, violates the Constitution and is targeting people for conversion.

"It's not the Army's job to convert Americans to Christianity," said the Rev. Barry W. Lynn, executive director of Americans United. "This event is totally unacceptable and must be canceled."

For their part, military officials are insisting that steps have been taken to ensure that no military personnel are under any obligation to attend, and chaplains say they are willing to assist similar events from any other faith wishing to use the military facility to reach the community. Are those assurances good enough?
