DC Voucher Program De-Funded by House E-mail
An editorial in Monday's Washington Post chides the House of representatives for passing a spending bill that will effectively end the DC school vouchers program after next school year (09-10).
A statement signed by Mr. Obey as Appropriations Committee chairman that accompanied the $410 billion spending package directs D.C. Schools Chancellor Michelle A. Rhee to "promptly take steps to minimize potential disruption and ensure smooth transition" for students forced back into the public schools.
Money could still be reinstated by the Senate, but the bottom line is that school vouchers, which send taxpayer money to private schools, including religious schools, have not shown to increase test scores, and are consistently rejected at the ballot box, even in the rare case a state constitution allows public funds for religious education.
