AP updates the story of a Mount Vernon, Ohio science teacher who defiantly introduced his own religious beliefs in class, refused to stop displaying a Bible in his room, and marked a student's arm with a cross to "demonstrate" an instrument. John Freshwater, who was fired and is appealing, has since become a lightning rod of controversy in the town.
Some residents consider him a courageous fighter for religious freedom. Others say he has brazenly violated the church-state divide. "This is going to be a mess," said Dr. Allan Bazzoli, who has written letters to the local newspaper criticizing Freshwater. "Resident against resident, and worse, student against student."
