Another California Teacher...
.. has been fired for refusing to sign a loyalty oath on religious grounds.
As a Quaker from Pennsylvania and a lifelong pacifist, [Wendy] Gonaver objected to the California oath as an infringement of her rights of free speech and religious freedom. She offered to sign the pledge if she could attach a brief statement expressing her views, a practice allowed by other state institutions. But Cal State Fullerton rejected her statement and insisted that she sign the oath if she wanted the job.Didn't we cover this ground already? A professor at another Cal State school was fired and then reinstated back in February. There was lots of angst over that one, but then it was resolved, by allowing her to attach a document stating that her oath does not include a promise to take up arms. Why was a similar arrangement not allowed here?
The Sacramento Bee has an editorial in yesterday's paper arguing against the "archaic" notion of a loyalty oath for all state employees, and urges the legislature to remove the provision from the California Constitution.
