Oregon Court Debates Parental Control in Religious Matters [UPDATED]

Oregon's Supreme Court heard arguments today concerning a custodial father's right to influence the religion of his 12-year-old son. James Boldt converted to Judaism in 2004 and wants his son to be circumcised as well. The boy's mother, Lia, objects and contends that her son is only agreeing to please his father. Many Jewish advocacy groups are watching the case closely and argue that the religious freedom rights of a parent are at stake. NPR's Day to Day ran a segment about the dispute earlier today (via How Appealing).

[UPDATE: An AP story on the hearing reports: "the six justices who heard the arguments over whether Boldt's son should be circumcised steered clear of religious issues and instead focused on custody of the boy."]
